Tata Trusts mulls legal action to unblock Tata Sons succession

Tata Trusts mulls legal action to unblock Tata Sons succession

The Tata Group is one of India's biggest business groups, and it is partly owned by special groups called trusts that look after the family's money and companies.

The people in charge of these trusts have to help choose a new leader for Tata Sons, the group's main company.

The current leader, Mr. Chandrasekaran, said he will stop being chairman in February 2027.

He made this decision after the company's board did not all agree to give him another five-year term.

Before he leaves, the trusts must pick someone to represent them at the big annual meeting and choose three people for a search committee.

But one of the trusts, the Sir Ratan Tata Trust, has been told it cannot hold meetings or make decisions because of an order from the Charity Commissioner.

Because of this, the two main trusts could not agree on one representative together.

So the trust leaders may ask the Charity Commissioner for an early hearing or go to the Bombay High Court for help.

Their chairman, Mr. Noel Tata, and other trustees met to talk about what to do next.

They hope everything is sorted out by Tuesday, when the annual meeting happens.
