Iran Intercepts Marshall Islands-Flagged Tanker Talara in Strait of Hormuz
Imagine a big oil ship, the Talara, sailing from the UAE to Singapore.
On Friday, near a busy sea route called the Strait of Hormuz, ships belonging to Iran's military came alongside and took control of the Talara.
Soon after, the company that manages the ship lost contact with the people on board.
A U.S. official and other maritime experts think Iran's special forces, the Revolutionary Guards, are behind this.
Iran has done this kind of thing before, usually saying the ship broke some rules.
This happened about 20 miles away from the coast of the UAE.
The company managing the ship is trying to get in touch with the crew and figure out what's going on.
This is the first time Iran has reportedly seized a ship like this in a few months.
Iranian forces intercepted the Marshall Islands-flagged tanker Talara and diverted it into Iranian territorial waters.
Contact with the Talara's crew was lost on Friday morning, approximately 20 nautical miles off the coast of Khor Fakkan, UAE.
A U.S. official and maritime security sources described the incident as 'state activity' by Iran's Revolutionary Guards.
The Talara was carrying oil products en route from Sharjah, UAE, to Singapore.
This is the first reported seizure of a tanker by Iran in recent months.
