Trump-Xi Summit Produces Truce, Talks and Little Agreement
Donald Trump and Xi Jinping met to discuss the complicated relationship between the United States and China.
They made some limited trade arrangements but did not reach a major long-term deal.
They agreed to keep talking about advanced computer intelligence.
They also plan to meet twice more this year.
The meeting included several ceremonial moments, such as viewing Joe Biden’s autopen-signed portrait and welcoming pandas to Atlanta.
The two countries cooperate through trade, finance and travel, but they also compete in military and technology areas.
Nobody knows which country will become stronger in the future.
Some people fear Trump and Xi are creating a new world leadership group, but the article says that has not happened.
President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping agreed to continue discussions on “superintelligence” and meet twice more this year.
The U.S.-China trade truce was extended until Jan. 10, alongside mutual adjustments and concessions.
The summit included symbolic events, including viewing Joe Biden’s autopen-signed portrait and the arrival of two giant pandas in Atlanta.
The article says deep economic ties bind the United States and China, while rivalry spans military power, technology, artificial intelligence, cyberwarfare, drones and bioweapons.
European and other observers worry about a durable U.S.-China “G-2” order, but the article argues that neither leader has established one.

Meaning of the summit
Concern About a New G-2 Order
European and other observers see Xi’s meeting with Trump, despite skipping the United Nations General Assembly, as a possible sign of a new U.S.-China-centered world order.
No Durable G-2 Has Emerged
The article argues that the summit did not create a durable G-2 arrangement because Trump is a disruptor rather than an order-builder, while Xi’s ambitions exceed what the Trump administration would offer.
