Telangana Seeks ECI Clarification on Issuing Family Register Certificates During SIR
The Telangana government wants to give special certificates to people who have ration cards so they can vote.
The Chief Electoral Officer is asking the Election Commission of India if this is allowed while they are cleaning up the voter list.
Some people, like the BJP party, think this might help bad voters and want to stop it.
The state says it is just to help people who don’t have official documents.
They also want to finish checking all the voter forms quickly and make sure the list is correct.
Telangana’s Chief Electoral Officer C. Sudarshan Reddy has written to the Election Commission of India seeking guidance on issuing Family Register Certificates (FRCs) to ration card holders during the Special Intensive Review (SIR) of electoral rolls.
The state government’s move to issue FRCs, inspired by Karnataka’s Permanent Residence Certificate scheme, was made midway through the SIR and may face legal challenges.
The BJP has opposed the FRCs, alleging they protect illegal vote banks and were pushed by AIMIM, and may challenge the decision in court.
Digitisation of enumeration forms in Telangana stands at 76.28% overall, but Hyderabad lags at 55% with only 25 lakh forms digitised.
The Chief Electoral Officer emphasized that the SIR clean‑up is aimed at an error‑free voter list and is unrelated to government schemes, urging thorough verification and timely resolution of discrepancies.
