Thailand Demolishes Hindu Statue Amid Border Dispute
Thailand and Cambodia have been fighting over a border area.
On December 22, 2025, the Thai military used an excavator to knock down a big statue of Lord Vishnu, a Hindu god, that was built by Cambodia in 2014.
The Thai military says the statue was on their land and could cause more problems.
Many people on the internet are upset.
Some Hindus, especially in India, think it's wrong to destroy a religious statue.
Cambodians think Thailand is being aggressive, while Thais say they are just removing something that was built illegally on their land.
India said the statue was part of a shared heritage and should not have been destroyed.
Both countries have Buddhist roots but also share Hindu history.
A long time ago, a court said the area belongs to Cambodia, but Thailand doesn't always agree with that.
The fighting has caused many people to leave their homes and has damaged important cultural sites.
Thai military demolished a nine-meter statue of Lord Vishnu near the Preah Vihear temple complex on December 22, 2025.
The statue was erected by Cambodian forces in 2014 on land Thailand claims as its territory.
The demolition was motivated by territorial claims and security concerns, according to the Thai military.
India condemned the demolition, stating it hurts the sentiments of devotees and is part of a shared civilizational heritage.
Cambodian leaders criticized the removal, calling it a disrespectful act that undermines cultural and religious heritage.
