Tukaram Mundhe’s Mumbai Food Safety Crackdown Draws National Attention

Tukaram Mundhe is a government officer who checks whether food businesses are safe and clean.

Since becoming Maharashtra’s food safety chief in May, he has led more than 3,000 raids in Mumbai.

Inspectors found problems such as cockroaches, rats, dirty walls, expired food and missing licenses.

Some large restaurant chains had their permits suspended.

Mundhe also stopped vendors from wrapping vada pav in newspapers.

After a judge asked whether court canteens were inspected, his teams checked them within hours.

Many people support Mundhe because they want safer food.

Some businesses say his department is being too harsh and should allow more time to make improvements.
