Satellite Study Reveals Severe Forest Loss in Assam
A group of researchers used satellite pictures to study forests in Assam, India.
They found that over 30 years, many forests have been lost or damaged because people are using the land for farming, building homes, and other activities.
The Biswanath Reserved Forest lost the most trees, while other forests like Gohpur and Naduar also saw big changes.
The researchers are worried that this will hurt wildlife and make it harder for animals and people to live together peacefully.
They say poor communities near the forests depend on them for survival, which adds to the problem.
The study was published in a science journal called the Australian Geographer.
A satellite-imagery-based study revealed significant forest degradation in Assam's reserve forests due to human activities.
Dense forest cover decreased in most studied areas, with Biswanath Reserved Forest losing 65.92% of its dense forest over 30 years.
Agricultural land and settlements increased, with Gohpur Reserved Forest seeing 60.28 sq km converted to agricultural land by 2020.
The study highlighted that poor communities near the forests depend on them for sustenance, contributing to the degradation.
Researchers warned that forest encroachment could disrupt wildlife corridors and increase human-animal conflicts.
