Sensex-Nifty divergence continues as closing auction volatility eases
In India, there are two big stock market scoreboards: the Sensex and the Nifty.
They show whether company shares are going up or down.
Recently, a new rule gave traders 20 extra minutes to trade after the regular market closing time.
Since this new rule started, the Sensex and the Nifty have not been moving together.
On Thursday, the Sensex jumped up a lot, but the Nifty only moved a tiny bit.
The Nifty had a bigger jump on Tuesday, when it went up by more than 150 points.
Experts think the two scoreboards will start matching each other again soon.
They are watching closely to see if the market settles down.
The Sensex closed Thursday up 373.76 points (0.5%) at 78,954.76, while the Nifty 50 gained just 11.35 points to end at 24,636.
The Sensex-Nifty divergence continued for a fourth straight session since the new closing auction mechanism took effect.
The Sensex rose about 170 points (0.2%) in the special 20-minute Closing Auction Session held after regular trading ends at 3:15 PM.
Volatility in the Closing Auction Session eased on Thursday despite the expiry of the Sensex's weekly derivatives contracts.
The Nifty 50 had gained about 151 points (0.6%) to close at 24,614.9 on Tuesday, and experts expect the gap between the indices to narrow.
