Tata Power Expands with HVDC Projects
Tata Power, a big company in India, is planning to spend a lot of money to build more power plants and transmission lines.
They want to increase their power generation capacity to 30 GW, with a big focus on clean and green energy.
They are also planning to build special high-voltage direct current (HVDC) projects that will help transmit a lot of power over long distances.
These projects include links from Rajasthan, Gujarat, and even to Sri Lanka.
Tata Power is also interested in entering the nuclear power sector, especially with small modular reactors.
They are looking to sell their stakes in some projects in Georgia and Zambia because they are not core to their business.
The company is aiming to reach 4 crore distribution customers by 2030.
They are also watching new laws that might allow private companies to build and operate nuclear power plants.
Tata Power plans to invest ₹1.25 lakh crore from FY26 to FY30 to expand power generation capacity to 30 GW, including 20 GW of clean and green energy.
The company aims to increase its transmission line network to 10,000 CKM and reach 4 crore distribution customers by 2030.
Tata Power will bid for five HVDC projects involving a capital expenditure of ₹1 lakh crore, including projects in Rajasthan, Gujarat, and international links to Sri Lanka.
The company plans to divest its stakes in power projects in Georgia and Zambia and is exploring entry into the nuclear power sector with small modular reactors.
Tata Power is closely monitoring the Draft Electricity (Amendment) Bill 2025, which allows parallel licensing and cost-reflective tariffs.
