ED Attaches Rs 2.40 Crore Assets in Disproportionate Assets Case
The Directorate of Enforcement (ED) in Guwahati has attached assets worth Rs 2.40 crore belonging to Karun Jyoti Baruah, a former engineer at Oil India Limited.
These assets include life insurance policies and a residential building.
The ED is investigating Baruah for allegedly having assets that are much more than what he could earn legally.
The investigation started after the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) filed a case against him for corruption.
The ED found that Baruah bought many insurance policies and built a house with money that he could not properly explain.
The case is still being investigated.
ED provisionally attached assets worth Rs 2.40 crore under PMLA, 2002.
Assets include 67 LIC policies valued at Rs 1.96 crore and a residential building worth Rs 43.99 lakh.
Investigation linked to alleged disproportionate assets of Rs 2.39 crore during Baruah's tenure from 2009 to 2019.
ED's probe revealed Baruah purchased 44 LIC policies in cash and failed to explain high volume of insurance investments.
Further investigation in the case is currently underway.
