Odisha MLAs Get 200% Pay Hike
Odisha's lawmakers, called MLAs, have given themselves a big pay raise.
Their monthly salary will now be about Rs 3.45 lakh, which is more than three times what they used to earn.
This makes them the highest-paid MLAs in the country.
While they were doing this, teachers and health workers were protesting outside because they want higher pay too.
Some people think it's not fair that MLAs can vote to give themselves raises, and others say there should be an independent group to decide their salaries.
The pay raise happened even though Odisha is not the richest state, and many people there earn much less.
Odisha MLAs' monthly salary increased to Rs 3.45 lakh from Rs 1.1 lakh, making them the highest-paid in India.
The hike includes a basic pay increase to Rs 90,000 from Rs 35,000 and a pension of over Rs 1.20 lakh for former MLAs.
The decision was passed unanimously on December 10, 2025, with the lone CPI-M MLA absent.
Opposition leader Naveen Patnaik announced he would forgo the hike for the welfare of the poor.
Experts suggest the decision could set a benchmark for other states considering similar raises.
