Mumbai Woman Recovers Stolen Phone in Varanasi
A woman from Mumbai named Ankita Gupta was visiting Varanasi with her family.
While at Assi Ghat, someone stole her mobile phone.
She quickly filed a police complaint.
Using the phone's location, she helped the police find and recover her phone.
The police did not act fast enough, so the person in charge of the local police outpost was suspended for not doing their job properly.
The police also found many other stolen phones in the same place.
Ankita Gupta, a Mumbai-based software engineer, had her Samsung S23 Ultra phone snatched at Assi Ghat in Varanasi while exploring with her family on December 30, 2023.
She filed a complaint at the Bhelupur police station, but officials did not take prompt action.
Gupta tracked the phone's location herself with the help of her engineer friends, leading to a police raid at a residential house in Varanasi's Manduadih area.
The raid recovered her phone and 12-20 additional stolen devices, including multiple iPhones.
The Assi Ghat police outpost in-charge, Rohit Tripathi, was suspended for negligence, and an internal inquiry was ordered by Deputy Commissioner of Police Gaurav Kumar.
