Mumbai Civic Polls Scheduled for January 15, 2026
The Maharashtra State Election Commission has announced that elections for the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and 28 other municipal corporations will be held on January 15, 2026.
This includes important cities like Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Thane, Pune, and Kalyan-Dombivali.
The counting of votes will happen the next day, on January 16.
The BMC is the richest civic body in Asia, and these elections are very important for the political future of the parties involved.
The main parties competing are the BJP-led Mahayuti alliance and the Maha Vikas Aghadi, which includes the Congress, Uddhav Thackeray's Shiv Sena, and the NCP.
The elections will decide who will control the BMC and other civic bodies, which manage important services like roads, water, and schools.
The last elections were held in 2017, and since then, the BMC has been run by appointed officials.
The SEC has made special arrangements to ensure that voting is fair and accessible for all eligible voters.
Elections for 29 municipal corporations, including BMC, will be held on January 15, 2026, with counting on January 16.
The BMC is the richest civic body in Asia, with a budget larger than several small states.
Key political parties include the BJP-led Mahayuti alliance and the Maha Vikas Aghadi, which includes the Congress, Uddhav Thackeray's Shiv Sena, and the NCP.
The elections will be held under a multi-member ward system for 28 corporations and a single-member ward system for the BMC.
The SEC has made arrangements for over 3.48 crore voters and nearly 39,147 polling stations across the state.
