WhatsApp Faces Lawsuit Over Privacy Claims
A group of people from different countries have sued Meta, the company that owns WhatsApp, saying that WhatsApp's messages aren't as private as the company says they are.
WhatsApp has always said that only the people in the chat can read the messages because of something called end-to-end encryption.
But the people suing Meta say that Meta can actually see and analyze these messages, which is not what WhatsApp has been telling everyone.
Meta says this is not true and that the lawsuit is a made-up story.
The case is just starting, and it's not clear yet what will happen, but it's making people wonder if their WhatsApp messages are really private.
Tech leaders are also talking about how safe messaging apps really are, and this lawsuit is making many people question their privacy on big platforms.
Zoho's Sridhar Vembu, who created a WhatsApp rival called Arattai, says that companies like Meta can't prioritize privacy because they make money from ads and need to show big profits.
An international group of plaintiffs has sued Meta, alleging that WhatsApp's claims of end-to-end encryption and privacy are false.
The lawsuit claims that Meta can access and analyze user communications despite publicly stating otherwise.
Meta spokesperson Andy Stone has called the lawsuit 'categorically false and absurd' and plans to seek sanctions.
The case is filed in the US District Court in San Francisco and could potentially become a class-action suit.
WhatsApp's encryption has been a key selling point, and this lawsuit challenges the company's most fundamental privacy promise.
