Punjab Dilemma on Centre's Gram Sabha Order
The central government in India has asked all states to hold meetings in villages called gram sabhas on December 26.
These meetings are to teach people about a new version of a work program called MGNREGA.
The Punjab state government is unsure about what to do.
They are having their own important meeting on December 30 to decide if they should oppose the new program.
The central government wants these village meetings to be live-streamed and recorded with photos and videos.
They also want everyone in the village, especially women and workers, to take part.
Centre orders states to organize gram sabhas on December 26 to educate people on the new MGNREGA scheme (VB-G Ram G).
Punjab government is undecided on whether to defy the order or let officers handle it, as they are organizing a special Vidhan Sabha session on December 30 to pass a resolution against the new scheme.
Gram sabhas must be uploaded in real-time with geo-tagged photos and videos, and active participation of villagers, especially women, labourers, and Scheduled Caste families, is mandated.
Centre has written to Chief Secretaries of all states to ensure compliance with the gram sabha organization.
Punjab's dilemma arises from the conflict between complying with the Centre's order and their plan to oppose the new MGNREGA scheme.
