Malaysia halts UNHCR refugee registrations
Malaysia has asked the United Nations refugee agency (UNHCR) to stop registering new refugees temporarily.
This is because Malaysia wants to start its own system to manage refugees, called the DPP.
There are about 215,600 refugees in Malaysia, most of whom are Rohingya Muslims from Myanmar.
Malaysia is not part of a UN agreement that protects refugees, so refugees there cannot work or go to school.
The Malaysian government says this new system will help them manage refugee data better.
However, some people are worried that stopping UNHCR registrations might make life harder for refugees.
The government also plans to deport about 5,000 Myanmar nationals, but this depends on Myanmar's agreement.
Malaysia asked UNHCR to temporarily halt new refugee registrations to implement its own DPP program.
There are about 215,600 refugees in Malaysia, mostly Rohingya Muslims from Myanmar.
Malaysia is not a signatory to the 1951 UN Refugee Convention, limiting refugees' rights.
The DPP aims to manage refugee data more effectively, but concerns arise about refugees' protection.
