Tamil Nadu Launches Assured Pension Scheme
The Tamil Nadu government has introduced a new pension scheme called TAPS.
This scheme will give government employees and teachers a guaranteed pension when they retire.
The pension will be 50% of their last salary.
The government and employees will both contribute money to this scheme.
The government will pay a big amount once and then a lot every year.
This scheme is good for employees because they will have money when they are old.
But it might be hard for the government to pay all this money because it is a lot.
The scheme will start in 2027.
Tamil Nadu introduced the Tamil Nadu Assured Pension Scheme (TAPS) to provide a defined pension to government employees and teachers.
TAPS offers 50% of the last drawn basic pay and dearness allowance as assured pension, with the government contributing 18.5% of the salary and employees contributing 10%.
The scheme includes a one-time payout of ₹13,000 crores and an annual burden of ₹11,000 crores on the state exchequer.
TAPS is designed to be more financially sustainable than the old pension scheme, with contributions managed by the Pension Fund Regulatory Development Authority (PFRDA).
The implementation of TAPS in 2027 is seen as an election promise, with concerns about the state's financial burden and the timing of the rollout.
