The film is about a family that moves from London to the countryside.
The parents hope the change will help everyone become closer.
Their children are unhappy about leaving their old life behind.
Soon, the children find a magical tree.
The tree takes them to strange and wonderful places.
The movie looks colourful and imaginative.
The actors make the family feel believable and warm.
However, the adventures do not build enough excitement.
The reviewer thinks the film has plenty of magic but not enough playful trouble or surprise.
Ben Gregor’s adaptation follows a family leaving London for rural life.
The Thompson children discover a magical tree leading to fantastical worlds.
Claire Foy and Andrew Garfield provide the film’s emotional centre.
Bright visuals, production design and the enormous tree are major strengths.
The episodic story lacks suspense, narrative momentum and inventive mischief.
