India-EU Trade Pact Amid GSP Changes
India and the European Union are about to finish talking about a big trade deal.
This deal will make it cheaper to buy things like cars and wine from Europe and things like electronics and clothes from India.
At the same time, the EU is changing some rules that give India special discounts on certain products.
This means some Indian products will cost a bit more to sell in Europe.
The leaders of India and the EU will meet soon to announce the trade deal.
After that, it will take about a year for the deal to be officially approved.
The changes in the rules will start in 2026 and last until 2028.
India is worried about these changes, but the EU says it's because India's exports are doing well.
India and the EU are expected to announce the conclusion of free trade pact negotiations on January 25-28, 2024.
The pact aims to reduce tariffs on European cars and wine and expand markets for Indian electronics, textiles, and chemicals.
The EU has listed major Indian export sectors like textiles, plastics, chemicals, and base metals for suspension of tariff preferences from 2026-2028.
The government downplays the impact, stating it will affect only 2.66% of India's exports additionally.
The changes in GSP benefits will be effective from January 1, 2026, to December 31, 2028, and will make GSP benefits redundant once the FTA is ratified.
