Houthi Advances Raise Stakes Around Yemen’s Red Sea Coast

Houthi Advances Raise Stakes Around Yemen’s Red Sea Coast

The Houthis are an armed group fighting in Yemen.

They have reportedly moved along Yemen’s Red Sea coast toward a narrow shipping passage called Bab al-Mandab.

Many ships use this passage to travel between the Indian Ocean and the Suez Canal.

If ships feel unsafe, they may take a much longer route around Africa.

That could make fuel, food and other goods more expensive.

Saudi Arabia is worried because it uses a Red Sea route to export oil when shipping through the Strait of Hormuz is disrupted.

Iran is accused of supporting the Houthis, but Iran says the group makes its own decisions.

Anthropic also reported that a weapons-development cell in northern Yemen used its Claude AI coding tool, though it did not identify the cell as Houthi.

The situation could therefore make the Yemen war part of a wider regional and global shipping crisis.
