Punjab BJP in turmoil over reshuffle of district presidents

Punjab BJP in turmoil over reshuffle of district presidents

The Bharatiya Janata Party, or BJP, is one of India's big political parties.

Its Punjab branch recently started arguing with itself.

A new state leader, Kewal Singh Dhillon, took charge in May.

In July, his team picked five district presidents.

Just two weeks later, all five were replaced, without telling anyone why.

Many workers got angry because they felt the new leaders did not listen to them.

Some said the party was behaving like the Congress, a rival party, and ignoring its old, loyal workers.

One unhappy worker, Maninder Singh Kapial, said he would go on a hunger strike to demand that an organisational secretary be removed.

Party spokespersons said there is no big crisis and that the party's "family has grown bigger."

Leaders are now holding meetings to calm everyone down before the 2027 Assembly elections in Punjab.
