Court Orders UPSC to Expedite DGP Appointment Process
A man named T Dhangopal Rao went to court because he thinks the government didn't follow the rules when they appointed a new top police officer, B Shivadhar Reddy.
The court told the government to send a list of possible police officers to a group called the UPSC to choose from, following the rules set by the Supreme Court.
The court also said the government needs to explain why they appointed Reddy temporarily.
Everyone has to respond by January 20, 2026.
The court will then decide if the appointment was done correctly.
The High Court issued notices to the State government and Central authorities challenging the appointment of B Shivadhar Reddy as DGP.
Justice Pulla Karthik directed the government to send a panel of IPS officers to the UPSC for DGP selection, complying with the Supreme Court's judgment in Prakash Singh Vs Union of India.
The court adjourned the case to January 20, 2026, for further hearing and filing of affidavits.
The petitioner, T Dhangopal Rao, argued that the appointment is temporary and not in line with the Supreme Court's directive for a permanent DGP.
The UPSC sought clarifications from the government regarding an officer's inclusion in the empanelment list, causing a delay in the process.
