Sri Lanka Restricts Yala Tourism as Drought Looms

Yala National Park in Sri Lanka is very dry.

Its reservoir is shrinking, so animals have less water to drink.

Trucks are carrying water to ponds around the park.

Many animals, including crocodiles, deer, buffalo, langurs, and leopards, need these water sources.

Park officials will close the watering hole and other busy areas to tourists for about a month.

They say this will help animals suffering from heat stress reach water more easily.

The closure may reduce tourism during an important travel season.

Officials say reopening will depend largely on the weather and expected El Niño conditions.
