Sports Governance Bill Passes, Excluding BCCI from RTI Act
Imagine the government is making new rules for sports teams.
These rules, called the National Sports Governance Bill, aim to make things fair and open.
One rule said anyone could ask questions about the richest cricket organization in the world, the BCCI, like how they pick players or spend money.
However, a later change in the law said that the BCCI did not need to follow all the rules of transparency.
This is because the BCCI does not get money directly from the government, so the new rules do not affect them.
The government wants all sports teams to follow rules, but the cricket board argues it's a private company and doesn't have to.
The National Sports Governance Bill, 2025, passed in both houses of Parliament, aims to regulate sports bodies.
The Bill seeks to align sports governance with Olympic/Paralympic Charters and international best practices for transparency.
Originally, the Bill's language included the BCCI under RTI, but was amended to exclude them.
BCCI has long resisted being labeled a public authority, citing its financial and organizational independence.
Several bodies, including the Supreme Court and Law Commission, have recommended bringing the BCCI under the RTI Act.
