China Opens High‑Altitude Drone R&D Center Near Everest
China has built a new lab for drones that can fly in very high places, like near Mount Everest.
The lab is at Xizang University in Tibet, where the air is thin and the weather is tough.
Scientists there want to make drones that can help guard borders, deliver supplies, and help with emergencies.
This is part of China’s plan to be better at new technology, especially because the United States is also working on advanced drones.
The centre will also study how to protect the environment and help with scientific monitoring in the mountains.
China inaugurated its first high‑altitude drone R&D centre near Mount Everest on July 3, 2024.
The centre is located at Xizang University on the Tibetan Plateau, an ideal testing ground for extreme‑altitude UAVs.
Its research focuses on border patrol, security, logistics, transport, ecological protection, and emergency supply delivery.
The project is part of Xizang University’s plateau science strategy and China’s low‑altitude economy plan.
The centre aims to overcome technical bottlenecks and strengthen China’s position in the US‑China technology rivalry.
