Karnataka Unveils First Gandhi Memorial Pillar in Bengaluru

Karnataka has unveiled its first memorial pillar for Mahatma Gandhi.

It stands at Government Arts College in Bengaluru, a place Gandhi visited in 1915.

Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar unveiled it on Friday.

The pillar was made by sculptor Arun Yogiraj from one piece of granite.

It shows symbols including the national emblem, the Ashoka Chakra, Gandhi and a spinning wheel.

The state plans to build similar pillars at 87 historic places Gandhi visited.

The project is part of a campaign marking 100 years since a Congress meeting held in Belagavi in 1924.
