Rajya Sabha Introduces Bill to Criminalize Vande Mataram Insults
The government introduced a new law in the Rajya Sabha to make it a crime to stop or disturb people singing Vande Mataram.
Some politicians, like those from the CPI and Aam Aadmi Party, are against this law.
They say it goes against the rules in the constitution about the national anthem and song.
They also say that people from the BJP have shown disrespect to Vande Mataram and the national flag.
But the BJP supports the law, saying it will help people respect the national song more.
The law was introduced while there was shouting in the parliament about another issue, the NEET exam paper leak.
The Prevention of Insults to National Honour (Amendment) Bill, 2026 was introduced in the Rajya Sabha by Union Minister Nityanand Rai.
The Bill seeks to make it a crime to stop or disturb the singing of Vande Mataram.
Opposition MPs, including CPI MPs P Sandosh Kumar and John Brittas, and Aam Aadmi Party MP Sanjay Singh, opposed the Bill.
The BJP supports the Bill, saying it will strengthen respect for the national song.
The Bill was introduced amid sloganeering from the Opposition over the NEET paper leak issue.
