Bangladesh Weighs Joining Mecca Pact Amid Non-Alignment Concerns

Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Türkiye created a defence agreement called the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement.

It says an attack on one member would be treated as an attack on all three.

Bangladesh is talking with these countries and its other partners about possibly joining.

Bangladesh has not received a formal invitation yet.

Its officials say they would think positively about joining if invited.

They also say the agreement would not stop Bangladesh from working with other countries.

Some experts worry Bangladesh could be pulled into wars involving the existing members.

Other supporters believe the pact could improve Bangladesh’s security and create new strategic opportunities.
