Maharashtra Renews Babulnath Temple Land Lease
The Maharashtra government has renewed the lease for a part of the land at the Babulnath Temple in Mumbai for 30 years at just ₹1.
This land has been leased to the Babulnath Temple Charity Trust since 1901.
The lease renewal, which was due since 2012, had been delayed due to bureaucratic issues.
The government also waived ₹34.57 lakh in rent arrears that the trust was supposed to pay.
The trust argued that the land is used for devotees' access and not for commercial purposes.
The government agreed and waived the rent.
The trust also asked for the land to be converted into freehold property, but this request is unlikely to be approved as the current policy does not allow it for religious land.
