First Solar Drops ITC Patent Case, Targets Rivals in Court

First Solar Drops ITC Patent Case, Targets Rivals in Court

First Solar makes solar panels using cadmium telluride, while TOPCon is a different solar technology based on silicon.

First Solar owns patents related to TOPCon because it bought a company called TetraSun in 2013.

It had accused several solar companies of possibly using its patented technology without permission.

The company is now dropping that complaint at the U.S. International Trade Commission.

However, it still plans to pursue similar patent cases in federal court.

The cases involve companies connected to Canadian Solar, Jinko Solar, T1 Energy and Trina Solar.

First Solar said new U.S. trade measures helped lead to its decision.

T1 Energy welcomed the withdrawal and said it would defend itself against any remaining claims.

Investors reacted negatively, sending First Solar’s shares down about 5%.
