Assam Freedom Fighters' Families Threaten Hunger Strike Over Pensions
In Assam, India, around 2.5 lakh families of freedom fighters are very upset because the government has not given them pensions that were promised.
They say the government has not done anything even though all the necessary steps have been completed.
The families might go on a hunger strike to protest.
They have written letters to the Chief Minister and a senior minister, but there has been no response.
The families want a monthly pension of Rs 10,000, Rs 15,000, Rs 20,000, or Rs 25,000 for each eligible person.
They are upset because the government is taking too long to make a decision.
Around 2.5 lakh families of Assam's freedom fighters threaten an indefinite hunger strike over pending pensions.
The Asom State Freedom Fighters’ Association alleges government inaction despite completion of all formalities.
Pension proposals for 1,436 eligible beneficiaries were finalized and communicated to senior Cabinet Minister Chandramohan Patowary on January 7.
The Association claims to have submitted detailed financial implications for different pension amounts to the Chief Minister.
The state government has not issued any official response to the allegations or the proposed protest.
