California Requires Human Oversight for AI Workplace Firings

California made a new law about how companies use artificial intelligence at work.

The law says a company cannot let AI alone decide to fire or punish a worker.

A person must help oversee serious workplace decisions involving AI.

Companies must also explain when AI causes a mass layoff, relocation or termination.

The law bans AI cameras or tools that watch employee bathrooms.

It does not ban companies from using AI to replace workers.

It also says lawyers cannot give all of their important legal work to AI.

Governor Gavin Newsom said people should remain at the center of workplace decisions.

He criticized the idea that the AI industry should regulate itself.

The law was passed after allegations involving biased AI tools at Meta.
