Tamil Film Industry Faces September Shutdown Over Release Window
Tamil film producers and cinema owners are arguing about how long movies should stay in theaters.
Right now, many Tamil films can appear on OTT services after about four weeks.
Theatre owners and distributors want that period extended to eight weeks.
They believe more people will visit cinemas if they cannot watch new films at home so soon.
Producers disagree because OTT payments help them earn money, especially on smaller films.
They worry that waiting eight weeks could make those digital rights less valuable.
Distributors have also stopped giving advance payments for new films.
Unless the disagreement is settled, film releases, shooting and post-production work are planned to stop on September 1.
Several expected September movies could therefore be delayed or affected.
The Tamil Film Producers Council and Tamil Film Active Producers Association announced a halt from September 1 unless the dispute is resolved.
Theatre owners and distributors are demanding an eight-week exclusive theatrical window before films reach OTT platforms.
Producers oppose the longer window, saying OTT rights are vital revenue for smaller films and delayed releases could reduce their value.
Theatre owners say four-week windows are reducing cinema attendance as audiences wait to watch films at home.
Distributors have stopped advance payments, while several September releases, including Sardar 2 and Demonte Colony 3, face uncertainty.
