After Satya Niketan Collapse, PIL Seeks Delhi Hostel Policy
A building used for student housing collapsed in Satya Niketan, and seven people died.
Vinod Jakhar, a student organization leader, asked the court to improve student housing in Delhi.
He wants Delhi University colleges to build hostels when they have enough land.
If colleges do not have enough land, he wants shared hostels for students from several colleges.
The petition says many students must live in private paying-guest homes because there are not enough college or government hostels.
It says these homes may not always be safe or affordable.
The Delhi High Court did not hear the petition urgently on Tuesday but scheduled it for Wednesday.
The court has also ordered inspections of buildings used as hostels and paying-guest homes.
A PIL filed by NSUI president Vinod Jakhar seeks a time-bound Delhi hostel development policy after seven people died in the Satya Niketan collapse.
The petition asks Delhi University to provide hostels at every college, or create common cluster hostels where campuses lack sufficient land.
The Delhi High Court declined urgent listing on Tuesday and scheduled the petition for Wednesday.
The court previously said responsibility for the collapse could extend beyond the paying-guest owner to Delhi University and civic authorities.
The court directed the Municipal Corporation of Delhi to inspect buildings used as paying-guest accommodations and hostels and report on permissions and building-law compliance.
