Housing Society Self-Redevelopment Gains Momentum Across Maharashtra

Housing Society Self-Redevelopment Gains Momentum Across Maharashtra

Housing societies are groups of families who live together in apartment buildings.

Sometimes those buildings get very old and need to be torn down and rebuilt.

Usually, the families hire a builder to do the work.

The self-redevelopment scheme lets the families rebuild on their own instead, with support from a bank.

A leader named Pravin Darekar started this idea in Mumbai.

Now, city councils across Maharashtra are talking about it too.

The Navi Mumbai city council has asked its officials to support the idea.

A study group has also suggested changes to city rules to help more societies do this.

The goal is to create affordable housing without straining roads, water and other services.

Mr. Darekar says he will meet Navi Mumbai officials soon to push the plan forward.
