Bernie Sanders Urges AI CEOs to Pause Development

Some very smart computer programs are called artificial intelligence, or AI for short.

A senator named Bernie Sanders is worried that these programs could become dangerous.

He sent letters to the leaders of three big companies that build AI: OpenAI, Anthropic, and Meta.

In the letters, he asked them to stop making new AI for a while.

He said AI might be used to create dangerous viruses or act in ways people did not expect.

He reminded them that they once promised to stop if AI became too risky to control.

The companies are spending lots of money on AI, even though people cannot fully understand or control it.

Sanders wrote that it is not too late to avoid disaster.

He warned that if the companies do not stop, he and other senators may step in.
