Bombay High Court Halts Asiatic Society Elections, Orders Voter List Verification
Imagine the Asiatic Society is having an election to pick new leaders.
Someone important said you had to be a member by October 3rd to vote.
But some people joined on October 15th and wanted to vote too.
They went to a big court, the Bombay High Court.
The court said, 'That's not fair, the election rules should be decided by the society itself, not by someone else interfering!'
So, the court canceled the rule about the October 3rd deadline.
Now, the society has to postpone the election.
They need to check the voter list again to make sure everyone who should vote gets to vote fairly.
A new election date will be set later.
The Bombay High Court quashed a directive by the assistant charity commissioner regarding the Asiatic Society's voter list.
The directive had set October 3 as a cut-off date for membership eligibility, affecting new members who joined later.
The High Court ruled that the assistant charity commissioner exceeded his jurisdiction by interfering in the society's internal election process.
Consequently, the Asiatic Society's elections, originally scheduled for November 8, have been postponed.
The society will now conduct a verification of the voter list, and a new election schedule will be announced later.
