NGT flags major waste management lapses in West Bengal

A special court called the National Green Tribunal checks whether states in India are keeping their cities clean and their rivers safe.

This time, the court looked at a state called West Bengal and found that it is not doing a good job.

Many cities in West Bengal are not sorting their rubbish, so wet and dry trash is being mixed together and dumped.

Every day, about 8,069 tonnes of waste that should be processed is not being handled.

A huge pile of old trash, about 14.88 million metric tonnes, is still sitting at dumping sites.

Sewage, which is dirty water from homes, is also not being cleaned properly.

Some of this dirty water is going into the Ganga and Churni rivers, which makes the water unhealthy.

The court said this has been going on for a long time even though it gave orders before.

The state has to fix these problems, and the court will check on it again on February 3, 2027.

For now, the court is worried about the damage to the environment and people's health.
