Sri Lanka Eases Refugee Return From India With Immigration Measures
Many years ago, Sri Lanka had a very long war that lasted almost thirty years.
During that war, many people left Sri Lanka without the proper documents they needed to travel.
Most of them went to live in a part of India called Tamil Nadu.
Now, Sri Lanka's government has made a new rule to help these people come back home.
The rule lets them return without getting in trouble for leaving without documents.
Before they can come home, a special team checks that they have not done very serious things like hurting people.
If they are cleared, they get temporary passports and can enter through authorised airports or ports.
People who are not cleared will be stopped at the border.
Many refugees have already returned home, but almost 89,000 Sri Lankan Tamils still live in Tamil Nadu today.
Sri Lanka's cabinet approved special immigration arrangements to ease the voluntary return of refugees who left the country without valid travel documents during the civil war.
Returnees who left before August 1, 2006 without a passport will be screened by the State Intelligence Service for accusations of murder, treason or other specified offences.
Cleared returnees may enter via authorised airports or ports on temporary passports without facing legal proceedings for unauthorised departure, while accused individuals will be detained at the port of entry.
The measures, covering returns under UNHCR auspices, also apply to those who left between August 1, 2006 and May 19, 2009, the day the civil war ended.
About 89,000 Sri Lankan Tamils remain in and outside refugee camps in Tamil Nadu as of early 2026, with around 40 per cent born in India.
