Jharkhand HC Commutes Death Sentence in 2018 Rape-Murder Case
Imagine someone was given the worst punishment a court can give for a terrible crime.
But, a higher court has decided the punishment wasn't fair, so they changed it.
In this case, the person was originally sentenced to die for a rape-and-murder in 2018.
But the Jharkhand High Court, which is like a super important judge, said the crime, though awful, wasn't the very worst of the worst.
So, instead of death, the person will now spend their life in jail.
This is also not the first time this month, this same court has made this type of decision.
Jharkhand High Court commuted a death sentence to life imprisonment in a 2018 rape-and-murder case.
The court stated the case did not meet the 'rarest of rare' criteria for the death penalty.
The decision came after hearing appeals from both the convict and the state government.
The convict, Bandhan Oraon, had appealed against the lower court's original death sentence.
This is the third such commutation by the Jharkhand High Court this month.
