AI-Powered Alerts Save 160 Elephants on Rail Tracks in 2025
In 2025, the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) in India used a special AI system to save 160 elephants from getting hurt on train tracks.
This system, called the Intrusion Detection System (IDS), detects elephants near the tracks and sends alerts to train drivers.
Since 2017, NFR has saved over 2,000 elephants using this technology.
The system is now being used in four sections of the NFR, covering 62.7 km of elephant corridors.
NFR is also using other methods like the 'Plan Bee' system, which plays honeybee sounds to keep elephants away from the tracks.
Indian Railways is planning to expand this system to other parts of the country to protect more wildlife.
