Indian Stocks Slide as Oil and Regional Tensions Persist
Indian share prices weakened as investors became worried about higher oil prices and conflict involving the United States and Iran.
The Sensex and Nifty both fell on Monday.
They also moved lower in early trading on Tuesday.
Oil became more expensive because investors feared that fighting could disrupt supplies.
There were also concerns that strong US jobs data might lead to higher US interest rates.
Higher rates can make investors more careful about buying shares.
Foreign investors sold Indian shares on Friday but bought some shares on Monday.
Investors were also watching US inflation data expected on Friday.
The Sensex fell 382.62 points, or 0.50%, to close Monday at 76,132.81, while the Nifty declined 118.55 points to 23,779.15.
In Tuesday early trade, the Sensex dropped 382.25 points to 75,750.56 and the Nifty fell 97.80 points to 23,681.80.
Rising crude prices and renewed US-Iran hostilities weakened investor risk appetite and raised concerns about potential oil-supply disruptions.
Brent crude traded between USD 97 and USD 97.52 per barrel, while WTI remained around USD 91–92 per barrel in the reports.
Foreign Institutional Investors sold equities worth Rs 3,111.94 crore on Friday but bought Rs 280.13 crore on Monday.
