US Sets 2027 Deadline for Europe-Led NATO Defense
The United States has told its European partners in NATO that they need to take over most of the defense responsibilities, like intelligence and weapons, by 2027.
This is because the US wants Europe to handle its own security more.
Some European officials think this deadline is too soon because they have problems like not enough military equipment and special US capabilities that can't be easily replaced.
The European Union has its own plan to be ready to defend itself by 2030, but even that might be hard to achieve.
The US has been asking Europe to spend more on defense, and some leaders have agreed, but the US president's views on NATO have been changing.
US wants Europe to take over majority of NATO's conventional defense capabilities by 2027.
Pentagon officials conveyed this message in a meeting with European delegations in Washington.
European officials find the 2027 deadline unrealistic due to production backlogs and unique US capabilities.
EU has set a target of 2030 to be ready to defend itself, but even that is seen as ambitious.
Trump administration has been inconsistent in its stance on NATO, from criticizing allies to praising their defense spending increases.
