Kerala Orders Fresh Vigilance Probe Into Gyanesh Kumar’s 2006 Case
Kerala has ordered investigators to look again at claims about a road project from 2006.
Gyanesh Kumar was the state’s public works secretary at that time.
The claims involve how contracts for the project were handled.
Malaysian engineer Lee See Been, who was connected to the project, died by suicide in Kuala Lumpur.
Reports say notes he left mentioned Kumar, but that does not prove the allegations are true.
A complainant asked the state to investigate, and the Home Department has requested files from the earlier inquiry.
That earlier inquiry did not reach a clear conclusion.
The new investigation will also look into claims that outside pressure affected the earlier inquiry.
Kerala Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala ordered the Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau to investigate allegations dating to Gyanesh Kumar’s 2006 tenure as state PWD secretary.
The allegations concern public-works contracts and the Kerala State Transport Project’s MC Road upgrade, reported as a World Bank-funded project worth about ₹215 crore.
Malaysian engineer Lee See Been, associated with the PATI-BEL consortium, died by suicide in Kuala Lumpur in 2006; reports say notes left by him named Kumar.
The probe followed a complaint by Malayinkeezhu Venugopal and will revisit the earlier inquiry, which sources say did not reach a conclusive outcome.
The Home Department has sought the earlier inquiry’s files, and officials say investigators will examine allegations that external pressure affected its progress; the claims against Kumar remain unproven.
