Experts Back One Nation, One Election
Experts talked to a group of lawmakers about the idea of holding all elections in India at the same time.
They said this could help the country's economy grow by making things more stable and reducing costs.
One expert, Gita Gopinath, said that during election years, businesses invest less money, which slows down the economy.
She also mentioned that holding elections together could save money and make government spending more effective.
Another expert, Sanjeev Sanyal, said that having elections at different times causes problems like policy disruptions and less effective governance.
Both experts agreed that holding elections simultaneously could make the government work better and help the economy grow.
Experts presented to the Joint Parliamentary Committee on the One Nation, One Election (ONOE) proposal, highlighting potential economic benefits.
Gita Gopinath stated that simultaneous elections could reduce uncertainty, boost private investment, and improve government spending efficiency.
Gopinath estimated a 1.5% increase in GDP, translating to approximately Rs 4.5 lakh crore in additional output.
Sanjeev Sanyal emphasized that staggered elections cause policy disruptions and governance issues, which ONOE could mitigate.
The committee continues consultations with experts and stakeholders as part of its examination of the proposed ONOE legislation.
