BJP to Raise Navali Reservoir Demand in Assembly Special Session
B. Y. Vijayendra wants the government to build another reservoir at Navali.
He says the Tungabhadra reservoir has lost storage space because of nearly 34 TMC of silt.
Many farmers depend on water from the Tungabhadra reservoir.
Vijayendra said an additional reservoir could help during droughts.
He also referred to a previous monsoon incident when a crest gate was washed away and water was lost.
The BJP plans to discuss the proposal in a special session of the legislature.
Vijayendra said experts should study whether a new reservoir or desilting the existing one is better.
He also said the project should not be decided for political reasons.
BJP state president B. Y. Vijayendra demanded a parallel balancing reservoir at Navali.
He cited nearly 34 TMC of silt reducing Tungabhadra reservoir’s storage capacity.
Vijayendra said the Navali project should receive a clear decision and budget funding.
The BJP plans to raise the issue during the forthcoming special legislative session.
He called for a scientific comparison between constructing Navali and desilting Tungabhadra reservoir.

How to restore water storage
Navali Reservoir Supporters
Supporters say a parallel Navali reservoir would provide an alternative and reliable water-storage facility for farmers, particularly during droughts or disruptions at Tungabhadra.
Desilting and Review Advocates
Review advocates say a scientific study should determine whether the existing Tungabhadra reservoir can instead be restored by removing its accumulated silt.
Project decision
Navali Reservoir Supporters
Vijayendra says the government should make a clear decision, allocate Budget funds, and complete the Navali project rather than merely announce it.

Vijayendra also acknowledges that claims about technology for removing such a large quantity of silt need to be examined before choosing an approach.
