Maharashtra MLA seeks impeachment of state election chief
A politician named Nana Patole, who used to be the Speaker of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly, asked for the state's election chief to be removed from their job.
He said this because he believed there was a lot of confusion and problems during a recent election for local government positions.
However, the current Speaker, Rahul Narvekar, said no to this request.
He explained that the Assembly doesn't have the power to do this and that the Supreme Court, which is like the highest court in the country, had recently said something similar about removing a high court judge.
Congress MLA Nana Patole sought impeachment of the Maharashtra state election commissioner (SEC).
Patole accused the SEC of causing chaos and irregularities in recent local body elections.
Speaker Rahul Narvekar rejected the demand, citing it as beyond the Assembly's scope.
Narvekar's decision was based on a recent Supreme Court judgment about impeaching a high court judge.
Patole claimed the SEC was responsible for voter confusion and distress.
