Kolkata issues 12,823 birth, death certificates in 4 months
The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) has issued 12,823 birth and death certificates in four months.
This is because many people need these documents to prove their identity and residence for a special update of voter lists.
Most of the certificates were for births, and some were for deaths that happened a long time ago.
The KMC has made it easier for people to apply by increasing the number of daily application slots and setting up a chatbot on WhatsApp for appointments.
They have also added more staff to help with the high number of applications.
KMC issued 12,823 birth and death certificates between August 9 and December 9.
9,617 birth certificates and 3,206 death certificates were issued.
The increase in applications is due to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
KMC has increased daily application slots from 150 to between 500 and 1,000.
WhatsApp chatbot (8335999111) and dedicated counters have been introduced for easier application processes.
