Forest Department Allocates Beedi Leaf Collection to VSS
The forest department in Adilabad is giving the job of collecting beedi leaves to local groups called Vana Samrakshana Samitis (VSS).
This will help these groups earn money during the beedi leaf collection season.
The leaves are collected before the Karif season, with pruning done in March and leaves growing by May.
Each family can earn up to ₹30,000 in 20 days, plus a bonus of ₹5,000-10,000 for tendu leaves.
The forest department is also trying to revive old VSS groups to protect the forest and stop illegal activities.
Contractors have not been interested in auctions for beedi leaf units in some areas, so the department is turning to the VSS for help.
