PIMS Neonatal Deaths and Karachi Murder Expose Systemic Failures

Fourteen newborn babies died after a fire in a hospital nursery in Islamabad.

The hospital inquiry said an electrical problem probably started the fire.

It also said many safety systems were missing or had not been properly checked.

The babies were very sick and could not escape by themselves.

In another case, businessman Mir Raza Ali was found dead in Karachi after disappearing.

The first examination suggested suicide, but a second examination found injuries that made suicide unlikely.

Police surgeon Summaiya Syed said she had found problems with the first examination and later faced alleged threats.

Public protests and media coverage are pressuring officials to investigate both cases more seriously.
